The gabions are box shaped elements made from double twist hexagonal wire mesh with mechanical properties greater than those specified in UNI-EN 10223-3, certified in accordance with the ¿Guidelines to draw up specifications for the use of double twist wire netting¿ issued by the National Public Works Council - Central Technical Service (Certified Product No. 226/001).
These elements are adopted for the protection of banks and embankments, for the construction of gravity support works, for retaining unstable slopes which have a ¿substantial structural importance¿ and, as such, must have the requirements specified in the Technical Standards for the Works under Ministerial Decree 14 September 2005 and subsequent amendments.
The gabions are installed after filling on site with stones in order to create a flexible, permeable and monolithic structure such as for retaining walls, river bank protection works, weirs and erosion control works.
The wire used in the production of the Gabions (with a low carbon content) may be coated with heavy-duty galvanising, with Galfan (a eutectic alloy of Zinc and Aluminium(5%) - cerium and lanthanum) and in many cases with an additional coating of plastic material, in consideration of the service life of the works and the degree of environmental aggressiveness.
In order to strengthen the structure, all the edges are reinforced with a wire having a larger diameter than that used for the mesh.
A combination of various types of mesh and wire diameters are available depending on the mechanical performance required and the various combinations of dimensions and measurements of the Gabion elements.
